Cork team emerged as the winners of the ever-rolling trophy of the first ‘All-Ireland SMYM Football Tournament’ held on Saturday, 18th September 2021. St.Benildus College in Sandyford, witnessed this national event with youth coming together from all the four regions of Ireland:- Belfast, Cork, Dublin and Galway.
The event was inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Clement Padathiparambil, the National Coordinator of the Syro Malabar Church in Ireland. Serena Joyce, President SMYM Ireland, welcomed the guests & teams and Bivin Varghese, the Global Deputy President of SMYM, delivered the felicitation address to the gathering. Rev. Fr. Rajesh Mechirakath, awarded all the prizes to the winners.
SMYM Ireland’s first national football tournament kicked off with six teams playing the exhilarating game. Cork had two energetic teams A & B; both topped their respective groups and reached the semi-finals. Team B lost in the semi-final but Team A, the young guns of Cork SMYM beat Tallaght (former all-Ireland champions numerous times) to reach the final. They defeated Swords (5-3) in the final and were crowned the champions of the tournament. Unbelievable final game by Cork A team who were probably the youngest and certainly the least experienced.
Captain of Cork A team, Sebin Sabu was awarded as the best player of the tournament. He was the joint top scorer with 6 goals from 4 matches (2 in the final). Best goalkeeper award was received by Justin James of Cork A team, with the most saves in the entire tournament.
The winners were congratulated by chaplain Fr. Jilson Kokkandathil, on Sunday 19th September after the holy Mass. Representing SMCC Cork, kaikarans Mr. Sony Joseph, Mr. Shinto Jose, Mr. Dino George and SMYM Cork & National animator Mrs. Tessy Mathew were in attendance at the time.
SMYM Cork members extend their sincere gratitude to the supporters, promoters and sponsors of the event.
